Get a wheelbarrow

A WHEELBARROW would have been a handy acquisition for the dozen or so Goulburn Triathlon club members who competed at both Callala Bay and Canberra earlier this month.

That would have been the conveyance necessary to bring home all the silverware won by the various competitors.

The bulk of the locals attended the ever popular Tri-Callala festival with six participating in the sprint distance event (750/20/5) and three taking on the longer club distance (1000/30/8).

Heavy winds and choppy water forced the swim to be shortened in the sprint event but this did not hinder the locals with Wayne Skillman, Lori McWhirter and former Goulburn resident Gill Tulloh, who each won their respective divisions. Isaac Hogan continued his meteoric rise in the sport, taking second in the very competitive 16-19 age group.

Former club member Carmen Jeffrey collected silver. Debbie McCartney, in her first competitive triathlon, did very well to finish ninth in her age division.

In the club distance race Robbie Skillman stormed back into form by finishing third outright (out of over 200 entrants) and second in the 25-29 age group. Gavin Moroney also collected silver in his age division and wife Nadine narrowly missed out on bronze coming fourth in her category.

Meanwhile in Canberra Barb Beard added to her already lengthy CV by winning her age group in the December Fest Olympic distance race.

Fiona Berry succumbed to asthma and was unable to complete the run leg. Nevertheless it was a most pleasing days work for the local club.

Competition in the weekly aquathon has continued over the last two weeks with week 6 and 7 having been run and won.

The absence of some of the big time performers has seen some jostling in the weekly results, in particular this week when 30 degree heat suited some competitors more than others.

Names like Andrea Ottley, Jaemin Frazer, Jacob Emmerton, Hannah Phelps and Andy Oberg have featured in the finishing order.

Others such as Isaac Hogan, Chelsea Stephens and Vanessa Toparis are getting nearer with all three showing spiralling improvement.

FAST FINISH: Lori McWhirter upon completing the Callala Bay triathlon.
