LOCAL water enthusiasts will celebrate the Bega Swimming Pool’s 50th anniversary tomorrow.
The event is the culmination of 12 months of hard work for Beth Hart and her tireless committee.
Originally planned as a reunion, it was announced in last week’s BDN that it will instead be a “family fun day”.
Hart confirmed the reunion dinner at the Bega Country Club had been cancelled due to poor support (BDN, 14/12).
On Wednesday, Hart met with pool manager Phil Harris and committee member Narelle Willis to discuss the final details.
The highlight will be the birthday cake cutting and commemorative book launch at 1.30pm.
The 120-page, black and white book includes historical photos and anecdotes from the past 50 years.
The book, compiled by Peter Otton and Chris Fantham, will cost $10 each and only 100 copies have been printed.
“If we sell out, depending on numbers, we will take names for a reprint,” Hart said.
“It’s a commemorative booklet to the pool and swimming club.”
Harris thanked Otton and Fantham for compiling the book.
“The committee is eternally grateful for their support and contribution, it’s greatly appreciated.”
Special guest for the book launch will be Bega Valley Shire Mayor
Cr Taylor has been a great supporter of the Bega Amateur Swimming Club, where his six children undertook lessons.
The free family fun day will begin at 8am with training for participants of all ages.
Harris will coach the session and said he was looking for the “older” swimmers to take part.
After a break, the program will resume with a free sausage sizzle from noon.
Races for swimmers of all ages and eras will then begin, followed by the cake cutting and book launch.
Later in the afternoon, Harris said he will bring out a water slide for the kids.
Hart said she was pleased the committee had settled on a fun day theme.
“I think it’s a more community thing, this is a good way to do it,” she said.
“We want to see as many people turn up as possible, make the day a great day.”
