From the Editor’s desk: Christmas spirit

Christmas is a time of goodwill and good cheer throughout most of the western world, including our beautiful spot on the South Coast.

But some people in our local communities will be hard-pressed to join in with their friends, relatives and neighbours for the usual gift-giving and festive meals that we all indulge in.

The Eurobodalla Shire never seems to fare well in the statistics that reflect homelessness, unemployment and income levels.

Luckily, however, this shire is blessed with people who really care about those who are not as fortunate as most.

They work tirelessly throughout the year to provide assistance in many different ways to ease the burden for men, women and children in desperate straits, often giving help that should be provided by our wealthy governments.

At Christmas time, these selfless workers really swing into action in an effort to give some cheer and goodwill to those who would otherwise miss out.

Church workers of all denominations and volunteers, both secular and non-secular, band together to organise the collection of goods and the making up of Christmas hampers, food vouchers, the ever-popular wishing trees to ensure everyone in need gets a Christmas gift (especially the children), and they cook and serve Christmas dinners, and still take the time to deliver all those hampers and gifts.

To all these generous-spirited and compassionate people, I am sure that everyone in the shire would thank them and wish them a very happy Christmas.
