“Once I got the results on Wednesday I had a pretty good idea, but I always prepare for the worst. But I was really happy with that. It was as high as I hoped I would get,” he said.

The Falls Creek resident received an 85 in English advanced, 89 in legal studies, 92 in biology, 92 in chemistry, 94 in mathematics extension and 97 in mathematics advanced.

“I was particularly surprised with my extension maths result because in the trial I got 80 per cent. The exam was not as difficult as the trial, but it was still quite hard so I was not expecting that mark,” he said.

Jai will take a gap year with plans to work and travel through Europe.

He will then study a double degree in law and science at the University of Wollongong.

“I could be an environmental lawyer, because in the future pollution is going to be a big thing,” he said.

Jai said he managed his workload well throughout the year.

“I was lucky I had Mum and Dad to support me so I didn’t really have to do much around the house. But I just worked really hard and stayed at it,” he said.

TOP SCORE: Shoalhaven High School’s Jai Clark topped his school with an ATAR score of 97.8.
